So, What Is Spinal Decompression Treatment?

Dr Brandi Crouch DC
Principle Chiropractor Explains

How does Spinal Decompression Therapy work?

What does it feel like?

What does each treatment involve?

Negative pressure is created within the discs by providing a series of slow pulls, holds and releases. Over time, this vacuum effect may in many cases help the bulging disc material to be ‘drawn back into place’. The fibres in the outer ring of the disc are also helped to heal by the increased nutrients which circulate in the area due to the gentle pumping movement created around the disc and facet joints.

Apart from an initial pulling sensation, which you quickly get used to, it is very relaxing-in fact many people fall asleep! We can address your cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, so we can target the exact area of your problem and hopefully bring you the relief you have been seeking.

Once your spinal level and treatment type has been prescribed for you, you will receive a specific treatment program with gradual adjustments as we make progress with your spine. You stay fully clothed, and can relax on the decompression table in a quiet room with salt lamps and relaxing music. Your exact requirements will be entered into the computer, you will be comfortably strapped in, the program will begin and you will be left in peace to relax for 20 -26 minutes while your spine decompresses in exactly the way you need it to.

Is it necessary to see a Chiropractor first?

Negative pressure is created within the discs by providing a series of slow pulls, holds and releases. Over time, this vacuum effect may in many cases help the bulging disc material to be ‘drawn back into place’. The fibres in the outer ring of the disc are also helped to heal by the increased nutrients which circulate in the area due to the gentle pumping movement created around the disc and facet joints.

How is Spinal Decompression Therapy different to Traction?

Traction does not provide the special logarithmic movement, systematically increasing and decreasing the decompression in the way that the Hill DT table does.
This cycle of movement is a critical part of the success of this therapy, as it brings the essential oxygen and nutrients to the area to help it heal.

Does it replace traditional chiropractic care?

Spinal Decompression is best used in conjunction with your regular Chiropractic treatment to bring about fuller healing of your spine. However, if you have not received results from previous Chiropractic treatments then you may well find this new type of treatment will likely be able to help, showing you a whole new way forward with this style of Chiropractic specific for disc and arthritis issues. In most cases there is NO manipulation involved, so this technique is suitable for people who prefer a more gentle approach.

How long does it take?

Generally it takes 8-12 weeks for a disc to heal with decompression therapy. Usually 20-30 treatments over 2-3 months is required to achieve the best result possible.

An initial consultation is needed with Dr Brandi to determine candidacy for spinal decompression.

Ideally three treatments per week will help the most, later dropping to twice per week, then once per week as you improve.

What success rate does this treatment have?

Generally we are achieving approximately 90% success with our decompression patients, however results can never be promised and you may still require surgery.

We will monitor your progress and refer you to your doctor should you/ we not be happy with your progress.

Will I feel better immediately?

Some people do feel a change after just one or two sessions, others after about 5 -8 sessions, and others not until their 20th or 25th session. It all depends on how much inflammation you have, how long you have had the problem, how severe the problem is, and how well you follow our guidelines regarding nutrition, supplements and activities. Every case is different and we can give no guarantees regarding results nor how long you may take to get better.

Are there any reasons it may not be suitable for me?

There are a few circumstances which may prevent you from being a candidate for decompression therapy. Some of these reasons include if you weigh over 155kg, are pregnant (for lower back treatments) have severe vascular disease or severe osteoporosis.
Your case will be assessed and if we need to seek approval from your medical specialist then we will not start care until you have been given clearance by them.

How do I know if my case is suitable for

decompression therapy?

You will need a Decompression Assessment where you will need to bring any X-rays and scans that you have. You will need to allow 45mins - 1 hour for this visit, plus 5 mins to fill out paperwork beforehand.

Our Chiropractor, Dr Brandi will assess your case, perform the necessary examinations, and will refer you out for more tests if required.

If we do not think that your case is suitable for decompression therapy we will refer you back to your doctor or another health professional for a different approach to pain relief for you.

The Research

Choi J, Lee S, Hwangbo G. Influences of spinal decompression therapy and general traction therapy on the pain, disability and straight leg raising of patients with intervertebral disc herniation. J Phys Ther Sci. 2015 Feb;27(2):4813

CONCLUSION: Spinal decompression therapy and general traction therapy are effective at improving the pain, disability and SLR of patients with intervertebral disc herniation.

Ramos G. Efficacy of vertebral axial decompression on chronic low back pain: study of dosage regimen. Neurol Res. 2004 Apr;26(3):320-4 doi:10.1179/016164104225014030. PMID: 15142337

CONCLUSION: Seventy-six percent of the higher dosage group achieved remission of low back pain compared to 43% of the lower dosage group. Chi-squared analysis revealed that the differences in response in the two dosage groups were statistically significant at p<0.0001.

Shealy, C. N., & Borgmeyer, V. (2003). Decompression, reduction and stabilization of the lumbar spine: a cost-effective treatment for lumbosacral pain. AJPM, 6(5)

CONCLUSION. The decompression system gave "good" to "excellent" relief in 86% of patients with RID and 75% of those with facet arthroses.

L Henry. nonsurgical Spinal Decompression of Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Case Report and Proposed Multimodal Chiropractic Treatment Approach. The Internet J Chiro. 2015 Volume 4 Number 1.

CONCLUSION: The author suggests that rather than trying to isolate which intervention had a beneficial effect, future investigation should evaluate optimal dose and identifying which cases are most likely to improve with this multimodal approach. Further research is encouraged on NSD as apart of a multimodal treatment plan for discogenic pain at a significant reduction in cost and risk as opposed to surgery.
